AT A FIRST GLANCE THIS STILL LIFE APPEARS TO BE A CONGLOMERATION OF LINES WITH DIRECTIONS
CULMINATING IN THE CENTER. HOWEVER, BRAQUE WORKS OUT THE COMPOSITION SO WELL THAT THE LINES
PULL THE WHOLE THING TOGETHER TO FORM A SOLID AND WELL-BALANCED ARRANGEMENT. THE CURVED LINES WHICH LINK TO THE CENTER FORM
STRONG DIAGONALS WITHIN THE CIRCULAR DIRECTION OF THE
CLOTH. THE STRONG HORIZONTAL LINE, WHICH SUGGESTS THE LINE OF A FLOOR, DIVIDES
THE COMPOSITION JUST SLIGHTLY BELOW THE HALFWAY MARK. VERTICAL LINES ALSO
DIVIDE THE WALL BEHIND THE STILL LIFE, BUT THE SUBTLE TONE STOPS THEM FROM
DOMINATING THE PAINTING. THESE STRAIGHT LINES SERVE AS A STRENGTHENING FORCE,
WHICH HOLDS THE AMORPHOUS SHAPED LINES AND CURVES WITHIN THE STILL LIFE,
TOGETHER. |
